The decision was supported by all participating countries at the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which is being held in Abu Dhabi from September 26 to October 1.
“Today’s congress has been particularly important for Uzbekistan. All participating countries supported Uzbekistan’s initiative to host the next congress in our country, and this was reflected in the final declaration,” Mirziyoyeva said.
The UN Crime Congress is held every five years and brings together governments, international organizations, civil society representatives and experts to discuss crime prevention, criminal justice and the rule of law. The current congress is addressing issues including transnational crime, terrorism, drug trafficking, corruption and environmental crime, as well as child protection and strengthening the rule of law.
During the event, Mirziyoyeva also met with Monica Juma, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and UN Under-Secretary-General. She said Uzbekistan is cooperating with UNODC on a number of joint projects.
The decision gives Uzbekistan five years to prepare for the 2031 congress, Mirziyoyeva said.
