Over 30% of road accidents in Uzbekistan resulted in fatalities since start of year – Ministry of Internal Affairs
More than 30% of traffic accidents in Uzbekistan since the beginning of the year have ended in fatalities, according to a report by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. High speed, failure to yield to pedestrians, and ignoring traffic signals were identified as the primary factors contributing to these tragic incidents.
During a press conference held at the Palace of Culture of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, officials provided an analytical review of the activities of internal affairs bodies for the first quarter of the current year. Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and Head of the Investigation Department, Ramazon Ashropov, stated that 1,102 road traffic accidents occurred across the republic during the first three months of 2026. Of these cases, 31.4%, or 346 incidents, resulted in death.
The analysis of the causes of these accidents revealed that speed limit violations remain the most significant threat, accounting for 32.9% of cases. Disregarding traffic signals was the second most common cause at 22.4%, followed by drivers failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians in 13.6% of instances. Additionally, 4.2% of accidents were attributed to drivers falling asleep at the wheel.
In addition to road safety data, the Deputy Minister shared statistics regarding criminal activity in the country. During the first quarter of 2026, a total of 6,211 preventable crimes were recorded. This figure represents a decrease of 596 cases compared to the same period last year, indicating a positive trend in crime prevention efforts.
The Ministry continues to emphasize the importance of strict adherence to traffic regulations to reduce the high mortality rate on the nation's roads. Investigations and analytical work are ongoing to further address the systemic causes of both road accidents and preventable offenses.
