Uzbekistan marks 75th anniversary of Geneva Conventions with Latin-script translation

The event, held in Tashkent, drew over 50 attendees, including deputies of the Legislative Chamber, members of the Senate of Oliy Majlis, representatives of government agencies, international organizations, academia, and media, alongside diplomats accredited in Uzbekistan.

Akmal Saidov, Director of the National Human Rights Center, opened the ceremony by emphasizing the Geneva Conventions’ foundational role in International Humanitarian Law (IHL). He said: "The Geneva Conventions form the cornerstone of International Humanitarian Law. Their translation into Uzbek using Latin script is a crucial step towards enhancing the legal culture of our society and ensuring that every citizen has access to the fundamental norms of humanism. This initiative exemplifies meaningful collaboration between Uzbekistan, the ICRC, and Switzerland."

The Ambassador of Switzerland Konstantin Obolensky highlighted his country’s historical role in the development and advocacy of the Geneva Conventions. He stressed the shared responsibility of nations to uphold international law, particularly in times of instability:

"Switzerland is a strong advocate of international law, including international humanitarian law. As a high contracting party to the Geneva Conventions, Switzerland deeply values Uzbekistan’s dedication to disseminating and implementing the principles of IHL. We are committed to working with Uzbekistan, bilaterally and multilaterally, in supporting initiatives that uphold human rights and humanitarian values worldwide."

Biljana Milosevic, Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation in Central Asia, underscored the enduring relevance of the Geneva Conventions in contemporary society. She commended Uzbekistan’s proactive efforts, noting: "The principles of International Humanitarian Law are increasingly pertinent in today’s world. The ICRC is committed to promoting these principles globally, including in Uzbekistan, and commends the government for its proactive efforts in this domain."

The Geneva Conventions, adopted on August 12, 1949, are internationally recognized treaties that establish standards for the humane treatment of individuals during armed conflicts. The translation into Uzbek in the Latin script aims to make these critical legal instruments accessible to a broader audience, fostering awareness and understanding of humanitarian principles among the Uzbek population.

The event included a video presentation and a photo exhibition titled “Dialogues on Humanity,” which highlighted the humanitarian significance of the Geneva Conventions. The official unveiling of the Uzbek Latin-script translation marked a symbolic moment, reflecting Uzbekistan’s commitment to global humanitarian standards and public education on fundamental rights.

Participants engaged in discussions on pressing issues related to IHL and human rights, emphasizing the necessity of public education on these principles. The event concluded with a shared commitment to continued collaboration on initiatives that promote humanitarian law and values.
