CEC of Uzbekistan proposes creating a council of heads of electoral commissions of CIS countries

Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan Zayniddin Nizamkhodjayev held a number of meetings within the framework of participation in the international scientific-practical conference “Technologies of the electoral process and election monitoring” in St. Petersburg. In particular, a meeting was organized with the Secretary-General of the IPA CIS Council Dmitry Kobitsky.
During the meeting, Zayniddin Nizamkhodjayev informed Dmitry Kobitsky about the preparations for the upcoming presidential elections in Uzbekistan and the ongoing reforms in the country in the electoral sphere.
Kobitsky spoke about the work of the IPA CIS Council in observing elections in the Commonwealth countries. He noted that the IPA CIS monitoring group includes experienced observers from among the parliamentarians of the CIS countries and the IPA CIS Secretariat. The Secretary-General also emphasized that the geography of observation has been significantly expanded: work is carried out not only at polling stations in the state holding elections, but also at polling stations abroad created at diplomatic missions.
The CEC Chairman invited a group of observers from the IPA CIS to take part in the presidential elections in Uzbekistan in October this year.
A meeting was also held between CEC Chairman Zayniddin Nizamkhodjayev and First Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee – CIS Executive Secretary Viktor Guminsky.
Guminsky noted that the CIS Executive Committee supports the initiative of the CEC of Uzbekistan to establish an Advisory Council for the heads of electoral bodies of the CIS member countries. He also informed that the draft regulation on the Consultative Council developed by the Republic of Uzbekistan has been sent to the CIS member states for consideration and it is planned to hold an online meeting of the expert group to finalize and agree on the above draft regulation on June 30, 2021.
