Uzbekistan ranks 132 in the Global Terrorism Index 2018

Uzbekistan ranked 132th in the new Global Terrorism Index report presented by the Institute for Economics and Peace.

The Global Terrorism Index reflects the “influence of terrorism” in the country and is based on an analysis of various socio-economic conditions, as well as geopolitical factors for the emergence of radical currents.

It should be noted that in this ranking, the leading positions are occupied by countries in which the activities and threat of terrorists are highest.

Uzbekistan ranked 132th among 138 countries, which means danger from terrorism in the country is almost completely non-existent.

The three leaders of the rating included Iraq, Afghanistan and Nigeria, Russia was in 34th place, the USA - 20, Germany - 39, France - 30.

Other Central Asian countries such as Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan were ranked 74, 75, 80 and 138th respectively.

The report’s authors note that the number of people killed at the hands of terrorists has been decreasing for the third year in a row. One of the main reasons is the continued weakening of the Islamic State terrorist group in Iraq and Syria, where absolute figures show the most tangible improvement.

In Syria, the number of people killed by terrorists almost halved during the year - 1.1 thousand victims in 2017 against 2.1 thousand in 2016 and 2.7 thousand in 2015. In Iraq, in 2017 there were about 4.5 thousand killed compared to almost 9.8 thousand a year earlier.

The Institute of Economics and Peace is an analytical center that has developed its own methodology for assessing peaceful tendencies and violence in the life of states from an economic point of view. Researches are made by processing of world and intrastate indicators. In addition to the Global Index of Terrorism, the center annually prepares the Global Index of Peace of Peace and other reports.
