Lion rips apart zoo keeper in Andijan

A caretaker, 45, who entered the cage to feed a lion, was mauled by the animal at Andijan zoo on December 28, 2018. The incident was reported on January 2, 2019.

The man, H.A., resident of Khujabod district, Andijan region, died on the spot. Reportedly, the zoo is owned by “Usmonobod fayzi” Ltd.

As one of the employees of the zoo says, the tragic incident occurred on December 28 last year. “The lion attacked the caretaker when he entered the cage to feed the animal. The predator simply tore the man to pieces. We have an assumption that the animal was hungry.”

The district prosecutor, his first deputy, the head of the district police department and the investigative team arrived at the scene.

On December 30, 2018, the Forensic and Judicial-Criminal Expertise was appointed to thoroughly study the case.

Also, on December 31, 2018, the “Chief Directorate of Employment in Andijan Region” was instructed to conduct “labor protection and industrial safety” inspections at the zoo.

The zoo in Andijan, which is considered the second largest in Uzbekistan after the zoo in Tashkent, was opened in 2016. It has more than 50 species of animals.
