Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan discuss development of transit and transport corridors in the region

On January 12, 2019 in Samarkand, Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov met with the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, who arrived today to participate in the first ministerial meeting of the Dialogue “India-Central Asia”, the press service of the Ministry said.

During the conversation, the sides discussed the implementation of the agreements reached during the state visit of the President of Turkmenistan to Uzbekistan on April 23-24, 2018.

Regarding the prospects for expanding bilateral trade and economic relations, the ministers noted the dynamic growth of trade, which in January-November last year increased by 53% compared with the corresponding period of 2017.

At the meeting, proposals on the creation of favorable conditions for commodity producers in each other’s markets, activation of interregional cooperation, and development of transit and transport corridors in the region were considered.

They also exchanged views on the deepening of relations in the cultural and humanitarian sphere, through the development of tourism, and the organization of joint events in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The ministers stressed their interest in successfully holding the upcoming Consultative Meeting of the Heads of Central Asian States in Tashkent.
