Mother sells her newborn baby for $400 in Surkhandarya region, plans to depart for Tashkent with proceeds
In Jarkurgan district of the Surkhandarya region, law enforcement officers detained a woman who sold her newborn daughter for 3,5 million soums ($400).
According to the press service of the Uzbek Ministry of Internal Affairs, the woman gave birth to a baby on January 26. Reportedly, she planned to depart for Tashkent after selling her child.
On this fact, a criminal case has been initiated. An investigation is underway.
Moreover, in December, 2018, in Karshi city of the Kashkadarya region, law enforcement officers caught a criminal red-handed who tried to sell a one-year-old child. A criminal case has also been initiated on this fact.
In accordance with the Article 135 of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan, human trafficking is punishable by restriction of freedom or imprisonment from three to five years.
