Amnesty International urges Shavkat Mirziyoyev to ensure the rights of Former Prosecutor General Rashitjon Kadirov

On April 8, 2019, Amnesty International sent a letter to the President of Uzbekistan regarding the case of Former Prosecutor General of the country Rashitjon Kadirov and 12 other codefendants.

According to Amnesty International, Rashitjon Kadirov has been subjected to physical abuse, mock executions, sleep deprivation and other ill-treatment. He and his co-defendants continue to be at high risk of torture and other ill-treatment since his detention on February 21, 2018.

Relatives of Kadirov have also asserted that he saw his family-appointed lawyer Alisher Madyarov for the first time only in August 2018, six months into his detention. They claim that Rashitjon Kadirov told his lawyer that he had sustained pressure from authorities to reject independent legal representation.

“I urge you to ensure Rashitjon Kadirov and his 12 co-defendants are protected from torture and other ill-treatment and that they have prompt access to necessary and adequate medical care. I also urge you to launch an impartial investigation into the allegations of torture and ill-treatment against Rashitjon Kadirov and his co-defendants and hold those responsible accountable,” the message of Amnesty International to the President of Uzbekistan reads.

It should be noted that Former Prosecutor General of Uzbekistan is charged under 12 articles of the Criminal Code including persecution of innocent persons, bribery and embezzlement.
