Uzbekistan grants convicts the right to participate in elections
The President signed the Law “On amendments and addenda to some legislative acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan in connection with the improvement of legislation on elections,” the Ministry of Justice reports.
The law amended and supplemented the Constitution and a number of laws.
In particular, according to amendments to the Constitution, convicts held in places of deprivation of liberty for crimes that do not pose a great public danger and those who committed less serious crimes are granted the right to participate in elections.
In accordance with the amendment to the Law “On Internal Affairs Bodies”, now employees of internal affairs bodies cannot be elected deputies to the Legislative Chamber or local Kengashes (Councils).
