Law enforcement officers detain teachers of several universities in Uzbekistan who extorted money for admission to universities
Employees of the State Security Service (SSS) detained teachers of several universities, who extorted money from applicants for admission.
According to the press service of the security department, during an operational event held by the SSS department together with the regional police department in the Samarkand region, an associate professor of the Samarkand Institute of Economics and Service and his accomplice, acting as an intermediary, were detained while receiving $10 thousand for enrolling a local resident for this university.
“It should be noted that in 2018, the associate professor was dismissed by the management of the institute for serious violations committed in his activity. However, he went to court, claiming that he was unfairly dismissed. As a result, on July 2 of this year, he was hired again. And a few days later, he again committed an illegal act,” the press service said.
In addition, a doctor at the central multidisciplinary clinic of the Urgut district of the Samarkand region was caught red-handed while receiving $18,000 for enrolling 3 citizens to study at the Samarkand State Medical Institute through his high-ranking acquaintances at this HEI.
As part of the continuation of operational measures, his accomplice, a doctor of the Samarkand branch of the Republican Scientific Center for Emergency Medical Care, was also detained.
Similar cases have been identified in Karakalpakstan. In particular, the deputy dean of one of the faculties of the Nukus State Pedagogical Institute promised a resident of the Kegeyli district to assist during the entrance exams to this HEI. He was detained by employees of the SSS department and the prosecuting bodies while receiving $3,000.
Another employee of this institute asked 4 residents of the Beruniy district for 2,000 – a total of $8,000 for assistance in admission to study at this university and was detained while receiving the requested amount.
A similar case was recorded in the Bukhara region. A lecturer at the Bukhara State University promised a resident of the Jondor district to enroll him in this higher educational institution. He was detained by officers of the SSS and the prosecutor’s office while receiving $4,000.
On all the revealed facts, criminal cases were initiated under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code. As part of investigative actions, the necessary measures are being taken to identify other persons involved in these cases.
