Uzbekistan and Russia to discuss resumption of passenger railway service
Uzbekistan has sent a request to resume passenger rail communications with Russia. This was stated by the Director-General of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov.
“We are in constant contact with our colleagues from Uzbekistan and resolve all issues related to the repatriation of people on a priority basis. As for the resumption of regular passenger traffic, we informed the Ministry of Transport of Russia about the request of the Uzbek side. In the near future, the request will be considered and a decision will be made on it,” Belozerov said at a meeting with Deputy PM of Uzbekistan Sardor Umurzakov.
According to the press service of Russian Railways, freight traffic between the two states is showing a stable positive trend. In 2019, it increased by 4% and exceeded 7 million tons. This year, there is also an increase: over 7 months compared to the same period last year, volumes increased by a quarter and amounted to 4.5 million tons. Nevertheless, the meeting participants noted that the potential for transportation is not fully realized.
