Population of Samarkand to reach 1 million, 5 districts to be created
Khokim of Samarkand region, Erkinjon Turdimov, at a meeting with youth spoke about the transformation of the regional center, the growth of Samarkand’s population.
Kun.uz correspondent said that the meeting discussed problems with the residence permit in Samarkand, excessive paperwork for young people who want to get housing on the basis of subsidies.
“We want to turn Samarkand into a city with over 1 million residents. I think, by the end of the year, the plan will be realized. 5 districts will be created in the city.
“Millionaire cities” have their own status in the world. Any businessman, before investing in an area, is interested in the population and labor market. The more residents live in the city, the more they consume. Therefore, the status of a millionaire city is special.
For example, Kazakhstan has half the population we have. But there are three cities with over 1 million residents (Almaty, Nursultan and Shymkent), and we have only Tashkent,” Turdimov said.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the former Bogishamol, Siab and Temiryul districts will be restored in the city, and Gulobod and Karasu will be added to them.
According to the State Statistics Committee, as of January 1, 2020, the population of the city of Tashkent exceeded 2.6 million people. In terms of population, Namangan (626 thousand permanent residents) is in second place in Uzbekistan. The city of Samarkand is in the third position with 546,000 residents.
441 thousand people live in the city of Andijan, and in other cities of Uzbekistan, the population does not reach 300 thousand.
