Until August 1, all names of localities, streets, terms, organizations, as well as working documentation and various forms will be in the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script. As it became known to Kun.uz, the Cabinet of Ministers gave relevant instructions to departments and organizations.
In accordance with the decree No. 61 of the Cabinet of Ministers of February 10, 2021 “On measures to ensure a gradual complete transition to the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script”, as well as, in connection with the preparation for the 30th anniversary of state independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan in all systems and spheres, the heads of ministries, departments and organizations were instructed to ensure the writing of all names of localities, streets, terms, organizations, signs, advertisements and announcements, as well as working documents and various forms in the Uzbek alphabet, based on the Latin script, by August 1 of this year.
For information, the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of February 10, 2021 approved a “roadmap” to ensure a complete step-by-step transition to the Uzbek alphabet, based on the Latin script.
According to the roadmap, the followings have been envisaged:
- Development of a draft regulatory document aimed at ensuring a gradual complete transition to the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script;
- Development of a draft government decree on the approval of the “Spelling rules of the Uzbek language” based on the new edition of the Uzbek alphabet in Latin script;
- Permission to discuss projects submitted for posting on the portal for discussing draft regulatory legal acts (regulation.gov.uz) after checking compliance with the rules of the state language, as well as compiling in the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script;
- Ensuring a complete transition of official websites to the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script.
Also, the resolution indicated the provision of the following in the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script:
- ID-cards, certificates of stateless persons, as well as residence permits for citizens of foreign states;
- Working documentation, various forms;
- Names of places, streets, terms, organizations, signage, propaganda, advertisements and announcements in the country.
In addition, a complete transition to the Uzbek alphabet, based on the Latin script, central, local print and electronic media, Internet sites, publishing houses, and the activities of printing houses is envisaged.
At the same time, it was reported about the development, adoption and publication of documents on office work in all organizations and other documents in the Uzbek alphabet, based on the Latin script, from January 1, 2023.
It should be recalled that the bill “On Amendments to the Law on the Introduction of the Uzbek Alphabet Based on the Latin Script” was published for public discussion on March 16, 2021. The discussion was closed on March 31, 2021. Subsequently, the press service of the state language development department announced the continuation of the discussion of this document until November 1, 2021.
According to the project, a new Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script, consisting of 28 letters and 1 letter combination, has been proposed in Uzbekistan.
