“1,723 officials were prosecuted for corruption in 2020” – Akmal Burkhonov

It is reported that in 2020, a total of 1,723 people were prosecuted for corruption, including 9 at the national level, 45 at the regional level, 1,669 at the district and city levels. 71% or 355 billion soums of the 500 billion soums of material damage caused by corruption were recovered from the perpetrators during the investigation.

In 2020, the largest proportion of officials who committed corruption offenses, that is, 835 persons (48.5%), were individuals who had committed offenses specified in Article 167 of the Criminal Code.

According to the analysis conducted by government agencies and organizations in which officials operate in 2020, 249 officials from the Ministry of Public Education, 166 from the Ministry of Health, 78 from the Bank, 70 from the Ministry of Preschool Education, 53 from the Geodesy and Cadaster Committee, 31 from the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education, 31 from the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations, 18 deputy khokims, 18 officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, 13 from the State Tax Committee, 7 from the Ministry of Defense, 3 judges, 3 executives of the Committee on Architecture, 2 employees of the Ministry of Justice, 947 officials of other ministries and departments were prosecuted for corruption offenses.

When analyzing the region-related activity of individuals prosecuted during 2020, it was identified that 245 official crimes were registered in Tashkent region, 173 – in Samarkand region, 170 – in Jizzakh region, 130 – in Surkhandarya region, 152 – in Fergana region, 109 – in Namangan region, 100 – in Andijan region, 95 – in Kashkadarya region, 85 – in Syrdarya region, 79 – in Khorezm region, 78 – in Tashkent city, 78 – in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, 51 – in Navoi region and 19 – in Bukhara region.

In the first six months of 2021, 1,676 corruption-related criminal cases against 2,544 officials were investigated and sent to courts.

Reportedly, material damage worth 592.5 billion soums was caused as a result of corruption cases. Of which, 170.8 billion soums (28%) were recovered, and the Bureau of Compulsory Enforcement under the PGO was determined to collect 421.7 billion soums.
