ECO chairmanship passes to Uzbekistan in 2022 

On November 28, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev took part in the 15th summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), which was held in the city of Ashgabat.

The issues of further expanding multilateral partnerships aimed at strengthening the ECO as a dynamic organization, deepening cooperation between its member states in the areas of trade, transport and communication interconnection, industrial cooperation, green energy and tourism, became the main topics on the meeting agenda.

At the summit, issues of increasing the authority of the Economic Cooperation Organization, the development of its institutional mechanisms and interaction with leading international structures were also discussed.

In this regard, the President of Uzbekistan came up with an initiative to create a high-level Expert Group to prepare specific proposals and recommendations for further improving the ECO’s activities.

An initiative has been put forward to establish the tradition of announcing each year as the year of development of a sphere within the organization. The President of our country proposed to declare 2022 the Year of Strengthening Connectivity in ECO.

Following the summit, the Ashgabat consensus for action was adopted. The document combines the key priorities of the member countries for the further development and strengthening of regional economic cooperation.

The heads of state and government, as well as the secretary general of the organization, congratulated Uzbekistan on assuming the ECO chairmanship in 2022.
