Within the framework of the World Championship, 20 sets of awards will be played (in 10 weight categories for men and women). Initially, the tournament was supposed to be held in Peru, but due to the coronavirus pandemic in September, the International Weightlifting Federation decided to postpone the competition to Tashkent.
Two weeks before the start of the world championship, the Chinese team refused to participate in it, they did not want to serve a month’s quarantine after returning from the competition. The teams of South Africa and Botswana will not come to Tashkent, the epidemiological situation in these countries has worsened due to the spread of the omicron strain of COVID-19.
The previous World Weightlifting Championship was held in September 2019 in Pattaya (Thailand). The first place in the unofficial medal standings was then taken by the Chinese team (10 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals).
