185 cases of child trafficking detected in Uzbekistan over three years

In 2017-2020, 185 cases of child trafficking were identified in the republic. In addition, most child trafficking crimes have been committed by women, Khalk Suzi newspaper reports with reference to the deputy chairman of the Yunusabad district court for criminal proceedings Fotima Ismailova.

“Among the main factors that lead to the sale of newborns are the lack of social protection of the child’s mother, the failure to satisfy her material needs, the pregnancy of unmarried women, the attempt to hide the child from her family, the need for childless families to adopt, and the lack of a solid legal framework to prevent child trafficking,” she said.

The judge also said that most child trafficking crimes are committed by women.

“A study of the social status of compatriots involved in this crime showed that many of them currently live in difficult conditions and are experiencing financial difficulties, they need social support and psychological assistance,” Ismailova said.

In her opinion, the prevention of child trafficking is one of the main areas of countering this trafficking, including, among other things, the holding of specialized events for potential victims. Accurate and correct identification of those who are at risk of being involved in trading is the key to the success of such campaigns.
