Uzbekistan, Iran discuss issues of economic partnership
On February 21, 2013 in Tehran, Deputy PM – Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sardor Umurzakov met with Vice President for Economic Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Muhsin Rezaei Mirhayot.
During the meeting, the sides discussed the current state of economic partnership between the two countries and the priority tasks for its deepening. In this regard, the importance of the agreements reached between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran in the framework of the 14th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on trade-economic, scientific and technological cooperation was stressed.
The sides expressed readiness to cooperate in increasing the volume of Uzbek-Iranian trade turnover. The signing of the Preferential Trade Agreement between Uzbekistan and Iran can be an important step in this direction. In this regard, the parties identified measures to strengthen interagency cooperation aimed at accelerating the agreement on this document.
Constructive proposals were made to increase investment cooperation in construction, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, electrical engineering, chemicals and light industry, as well as in the production of building materials. Relevant ministries, departments, industry associations and private companies of the two countries have agreed to develop new promising projects in these areas.
Special emphasis was also placed on expanding cooperation in the field of transport and logistics. Broad prospects for the development of relations in this area were noted, with a view to increasing the volume of direct and transit traffic through the territories of the two countries, as well as the creation of new low-cost transport routes.
The parties expressed mutual commitment to the implementation of the agreements reached at the 14th meeting of the Uzbek-Iranian Intergovernmental Commission on trade-economic, scientific and technological cooperation.
Following the meeting, an agreement was reached to intensify bilateral ties in order to accelerate the development of areas of cooperation and promptly resolve emerging issues.
