A hotline for reporting about the recent riots in Karakalpakstan launched
At the initiative of the parliamentary commission for the independent investigation of the events of July 1 and 2, a short hotline number 1374 was launched in Karakalpakstan, the press service of the Ombudsman’s office reports.
The commission headed by Ombudsman Feruza Eshmatova was established on July 15 by a joint decision of the Senate and the Legislative Chamber, and started working in Karakalpakstan on July 16.
Using this number, citizens can report about the situation in Karakalpakstan and happenings during those days. Then, according to official data, about 20 people were killed and about 250 people were injured. Earlier, it was reported that more than 500 people were arrested, and most of them were released after drawing up reports on administrative responsibility.
The Prosecutor General’s Office announced that 14 people were arrested as part of the preliminary investigation of the criminal case initiated by Article 159-4 of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan (Conspiracy to usurp power or overthrow the constitutional system) and other (unspecified) articles.
Gazeta.uz reported on the composition of the parliamentary commission. They should study in detail the facts of violations of human rights, freedoms and legitimate interests. It is promised to announce the results of the investigation to the public of Uzbekistan and the world community.
