Uzbekistan to install 40 waste sorting equipment by 2025

7 million tons of household waste are produced in Uzbekistan during the year. More than 300 waste processing enterprises use only 1.8 million tons of them. This was announced by Umarbek Khalilov, the first deputy chairman of the Ecology Committee.

At the Senate plenary session held on August 5, the government report on the implementation of the 2022 state program in the first half of the year was heard. At the meeting, senators asked the government how things are progressing in the waste collection and recycling program.

Umarbek Khalilov, the first deputy chairman of the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection, answered the question.

“Indeed, item 292 of the state program stipulates the requirement to increase household waste collection to 100% and recycling from 21% to 50%. If we look at the implementation mechanism of these tasks, we can see that a separate program has been developed and implemented in the next 5 years.

Today, 7 million tons of household waste is produced in the republic. Only 1.8 million tons or 26% of them are processed by 307 processing enterprises. 1400 tons of products are produced from it. By the end of the year, there is no chance of making it 50%.

Also, at a meeting held by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on February 2, 2022, a draft decision “On additional measures to organize sanitary cleaning and ensure cleanliness in residential areas” for 2022-2025 to increase household waste collection to 95% and recycling to 40% was developed, agreed with the relevant ministries and agencies and submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers.

According to it, implementation of the following has been planned in 2022-2025:

•  reconstruction of 29 household waste landfills;
•  construction of 437 waste collection sites;
•  construction and equipment of 26 construction waste and landfills;
•  purchase of 18 thousand 867 containers;
•  construction of 60 medical stations and provision of technical means;
•  construction of 38 reloading stations, providing them with 164 special equipment and 181 large containers;
•  installation of 40 waste sorting equipment.

As a result of the implementation of these measures, we have set a goal to increase household waste recycling to 40%. We can do these things after the President signs this document.

We really have a lot of problems with medical waste today. Therefore, as a result of the construction of these 60 medical units, the issue of disposal of medical waste will be considered,” Kun.uz correspondent quoted the representative of Ecology Committee as saying.

Umarbek Khalilov added that ideas about 100% collection of household waste might be unreal in terms of efficiency. Therefore, a 95-96% goal has been set in this regard.
