According to EastFruit analysts, despite the prolonged rains during the flowering of cherry orchards, in 2022 Uzbekistan will remain in the top 5 largest world exporters of these fruits and will continue to outperform Spain in this indicator, which for several years in a row faced with weather disasters.
It is noted that this year the volume of exports of sweet cherries from Spain has decreased, according to various estimates, by 30-40%. This means that Uzbekistan will continue to be ahead of Spain in the global export rankings of this trendy fruit.
“On September 15, 10 major foreign importers visited Tashkent and held talks with Uzbek exporters of cherries and other fresh fruits from Uzbekistan as part of a trade mission of the FAO/EBRD fruit and vegetable project,” the article says.
Last year, Uzbekistan exported 18,000 tons more cherries than Spain, but this year, the volume of exports of cherries from both countries will be more comparable.
“We believe that at this stage, Uzbekistan should pay attention not to its place in the world ranking of cherry exporters in terms of volume, but to product quality and logistics. Producing annually from 160 to 180 thousand tons of cherries, Uzbekistan can at least triple the proceeds from the export of cherries. Improving the quality of cherry fruit will help Uzbekistan export it to much more profitable markets that pay 3-5 times more than other importers, but for higher quality and larger cherries,” Andriy Yarmak, an economist at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s investment department, concludes.
