Length of service may be counted for prisoners involved in work while serving the sentence
According to the amendments to the legislation, the paid working hours of prisoners engaged in labor in prisons will be added to their total length of service. They are also allowed to use the services of sign language interpreters and watch TV shows and movies.
At the thirty-fifth plenary session of the Senate, the Law “On amendments and additions to certain legal documents of the Republic of Uzbekistan aimed at reliably protecting the rights and legal interests of prisoners” was discussed.
The law stipulates the need to calculate the paid working hours of prisoners engaged in labor in prisons by adding them to their total length of service.
“We have seen cases where the convicts are dissatisfied with life due to lack of work experience, whether they serve 5 years or 10 years after release,” Tolibjon Madumarov, deputy chairman of the Defense and Security Committee.
Any work performed by persons sentenced to deprivation of liberty during the period of serving the sentence may be added if social tax is paid by the penal institution for the period of this work.
In addition, it is prohibited to use illegal or discriminatory punishment measures against prisoners, and prisoners are allowed to use the services of sign language interpreters as well as translators.
At the same time, it is assumed that common accommodation intended for persons with disabilities of the 1st and 2nd groups deprived of freedom should be equipped with special tools and equipment.
Another important aspect is the criteria for determining the recovery of prisoners, the issues of motivating prisoners, the right of persons sentenced to imprisonment to watch movies and TV shows during non-working hours, except for the time reserved for night rest.
