Negligence that killed 18 children: Government must immediately stop the sale of over-the-counter drugs
Today, the pharmaceutical business of Uzbekistan has “progressed” to such an extent that this “progress” does not leave the need for citizens to go to the hospital. Kun.uz conducted a small experiment in this regard. When we entered several pharmacies and told them that we were suffering from various diseases, we were surprised by the suggestions of pharmacists.
When you or someone close to you gets sick, do you go to the doctor first or run to the pharmacy? The second choice seems easier, more convenient and closer, doesn’t it? Because even if you don’t have a doctor’s prescription, it is enough to tell the pharmacist about your sickness: they will prescribe medicines based on the descriptions you give, without asking for any reason.
Nobody cares if we are patients and not buyers in the market. Almost no pharmacist asks the customer for a doctor’s recommendation. Over-the-counter multivitamins are fine, but what about other medications that may be offered and have adverse effect?
In fact, it is difficult to trust many doctors: there are many cases where pharmacists and pharmacies “have the same language”. However, when one experiences pain, he should trust someone, but most people buy the drugs recommended by doctors, even if they have no money. And the result is abstract. Because in Uzbekistan, the sale of drugs is more beneficial than the patient’s recovery.
There are legitimate questions: will this system, which has not been rectified for years, ever find its right way? Shall everybody keep silent even after sacrificing? Does anyone in New Uzbekistan care about the sale of drugs without a prescription, the prescription of over-the-counter drugs by doctors, the quality control of foreign and local manufacturers’ products, and the recovery of patients in general? So, there are many questions, but there are no answers…
