Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan agreed to establish a common border and resolve all border disputes, the President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov said.

“Yesterday we put an end to the border issue with neighboring Uzbekistan,” he said.

According to Japarov, Uzbekistan undertakes the obligation to provide water to the Kyrgyz villages in the border areas. At the same time, the leader of Kyrgyzstan did not specify whether a document was signed or not.

He noted that the protests in the country against the transfer of the Andijan water reservoir to Uzbekistan were motivated by forces pursuing personal goals. “Their main goal was not achieved because people fully understood how the problem was being resolved,” he said.

The length of the Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan border is more than 1300 km. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, several dozen disputed areas were formed along its lines. For almost 30 years, Bishkek and Tashkent could not agree on border demarcation and delimitation. The parties managed to activate the process in the fall of 2017. In the autumn of 2022, the parliaments of the two countries ratified agreements on border issues.
