Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs receives EU Special Representative for Human Rights

On April 18, the Ministry of Internal Affairs hosted a meeting between the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan, Yakhojon Abdulkhakov, and the delegation of the European Union.

According to the MIA press service, Abdulkhakov spoke in detail about the reforms carried out in the system in recent years.

“EU Special Representative Eamon Gilmore noted the ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan in all areas, including the provision of human rights, and stated that the European Union supports these reforms. He also attached particular importance to the activities carried out in cooperation with the European Union and the ministries and departments of Uzbekistan,” the report reads.

Commenting on the “Mehr” event, Eamon Gilmore praised the work done by Uzbekistan to return its citizens from war-torn territories such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

In addition, when discussing reforms to ensure women’s rights in Uzbekistan, Gilmore acknowledged the importance of passing a law criminalizing domestic violence.

In conclusion, the EU representative on human rights noted that he positively perceives the reforms being carried out in Uzbekistan in terms of ensuring human rights and is ready to continue and develop a constructive dialogue on the issues raised during the meeting.
