Maersk to connect Georgia’s Poti seaport with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan
Transit cargo transportation through the Caspian Sea will be provided on a weekly basis.
The Danish logistics company Maersk plans to deliver cargo from the Georgian port of Poti to the cities of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, the Polish publication Trans.info reported.
Maersk intends to launch cargo transportation along the Middle Corridor, which will connect China and European countries. Intermodal service will be provided every week.
The Georgian port of Poti will receive goods from Europe, the USA and the Far East. Then they are delivered by rail to the port of Baku. Then the cargo travels across the Caspian Sea to the Kazakh port of Aktau, from where it is redirected to the cities of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
In the future, it is possible to connect Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan to the route.
Maersk notes that in the event of disruption of the railway to Baku, it is possible to use the capacity of trucks involved in the countries’ supply chain.
In 2022, Uzbekistan increased the volume of cargo transportation through Georgia by 72%. In addition, Uzbekistan intends to build or lease terminals and warehouses in Georgian ports for a long time.
