Uzbekistan ranks 78th in WJP Rule of Law Index

Having scored 50 points out of 100, Uzbekistan is placed between Sri Lanka (77) and India (79).

Among the CIS countries included in the rating, Kazakhstan took the highest place (65th place), and Russia – the lowest (113th place). Kyrgyzstan ranked 103rd and Belarus – 104th.

Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Germany topped the list. The last places are taken by Venezuela, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Haiti, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The WJP rating is based on surveys of citizens, lawyers, and experts in the legal field. Eight factors are used to measure the rule of law: constraints on government powers, absence of corruption, open government, fundamental rights, order and security, regulatory enforcement, civil justice, and criminal justice.

According to the WJP, the rule of law is declining for the seventh year in a row. Compared to 2016, the recession affected 78% of countries. The two main reasons for the weakening of the rule of law are the rise of authoritarianism and the weakness of the judicial system.
