Uzbekistan aims to boost coal production to 10 million tons by 2025
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was briefed today on plans to increase coal mining operations.
According to the presidential press service, all energy sectors are being developed to satisfy the growing needs of the population and economy, with coal being an optimal source of energy in certain industries. Uzbekistan’s coal reserves total nearly 2 billion tons.
These reserves are being gradually developed, with coal production consistently on the rise. In particular, the production rate was less than 4 million tons per year in 2016, but it reached 6.55 million tons in 2023.
Previously, the president emphasized the necessity of attracting investors to the coal mining fields and executing new projects. Consequently, last year saw progress in engaging the private sector, with entrepreneurs mining 369 thousand tons of coal.
The presentation also provided information on planned activities in the industry. It was highlighted that coal production is expected to reach 8 million tons this year, with 900 thousand tons to be mined by entrepreneurs. A new coal enrichment facility with a capacity of 500 thousand tons per year will be launched at the "Shargunkumir" joint-stock company.
Geological surveys are being conducted on four sites in Surkhandarya, Kashkadarya, and the Tashkent region, with mining operations planned to begin next year.
Additionally, with the help of advanced foreign expertise, the assessment and drilling work of coal seams continue. These initiatives are expected to increase the annual coal production to 10 million tons by 2025.
Instructions have been given to responsible parties to implement international standards in the sector, improve coal quality, and expedite investment projects.
