Kyrgyzstan may ban import of vegetables and fruits from Uzbekistan

Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh of Kyrgyzstan Balbak Tulobayev proposed introducing a ban on the import of vegetables, fruits and berries from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to help local farmers sell their products.

“Why should we enrich others and buy their products if we have our own? We want to eat local vegetables, fruits and berries, and not just export them,” he said during a meeting of the Committee on Agrarian Policy, Water Resources, Ecology and Regional Development.

At the same time, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Kubat Kuseyinov replied that he would consider this issue.

Deputy Zamirbek Mamasadikov also reported that farmers in the Osh region are complaining that prices for tomatoes have dropped and no one is buying their products, since watermelons, melons and vegetables are imported from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to Kyrgyzstan.

“We cannot compete with them in terms of the cheapness of their products, since their growing conditions and climate are completely different,” he explained.
