Uzbekistan prohibits activities of foreign political parties and tightens regulations on deputies and senators
Amendments have been made to legislative acts prohibiting deputies and senators from holding a residence permit in a foreign state, being absent from faction meetings for 30 days without valid reasons, and other new provisions.
The president signed the law "On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan," Norma.uz reports.
The document prohibits the creation and activities of political parties of foreign states and their subdivisions on the territory of Uzbekistan.
Additionally, the list of circumstances under which the powers of a deputy or senator are terminated prematurely is expanded. Specifically:
• Engaging in other types of paid activities (except scientific, creative, and pedagogical activities) after receiving a warning, by a deputy or senator working in the Senate on a permanent basis;
• Non-participation without valid reasons for 30 or more working days during the year in the activities of the chamber, faction of a political party, committee, or commission to which they are elected;
• Obtaining a residence permit in a foreign state or any other document confirming the right to permanent residence;
• Leaving the party membership of a deputy elected on the party list that nominated them as a candidate for deputy.
The document establishes the following measures for violating the code of ethics for deputies and senators:
• Issuing a warning;
• Requiring an apology;
• Publicizing the fact of the violation of the code of ethics;
• Withholding from the salary of a deputy or senator working in the Senate on a permanent basis;
• Premature termination of the powers of a deputy or senator.
Similar measures are provided for deputies of regional, district, and city councils of people's deputies.
In the case of non-participation by a deputy of the Legislative Chamber or a senator working in the Senate on a permanent basis, without valid reasons, at meetings of the respective chamber, a faction of the political party to which they belong, as well as the committee or commission to which they are elected, one day's salary is withheld from the deputy or senator without their consent for each case of non-participation.
