IAEA and Uzbekistan collaborate on nuclear power project, including expert mission for safety infrastructure
On September 19, a meeting took place at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) between a delegation from Uzbekistan, led by the Chairman of the Committee for Industrial, Radiation, and Nuclear Safety, Abduvakkos Rafikov, and the IAEA Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi.
During the meeting, the Director General was informed about Uzbekistan's dynamic economic growth and the country's increasing need for the development of nuclear energy. Additionally, the latest changes in the structure and status of Uzbekistan's national regulator in the fields of industrial, radiation, and nuclear safety were discussed.
The parties paid particular attention to the plans for building a small nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan, emphasizing that Uzbekistan is one of the first countries to implement such a project.
In response, Rafael Grossi confirmed the IAEA leadership's intention to support the efforts of the Uzbek government to strengthen the national regulator through various IAEA platforms. He specifically proposed organizing an expert mission to Uzbekistan to assess the regulatory safety infrastructure and ensure its compliance with IAEA safety standards.
