Russian MP’s Call for Visa Regime Amid Army Recruitment Tensions

Russian MP Sergey Mironov called for a visa regime for Uzbek citizens, following a statement from the Uzbek Consulate in Kazan advising Uzbeks against joining the Russian army. Uzbek officials Alisher Kadirov and Bobur Bekmurodov countered Mironov's suggestion, emphasizing the economic contributions of Uzbek migrant workers to Russia and cautioning that such rhetoric could strain bilateral relations.

Foreign Currency Market Shows Surplus

For the first half of 2024, Uzbekistan's foreign currency supply exceeded demand, bringing stability to the exchange market. The Central Bank reported a 13% decrease in the gap between currency sales and purchases, buoyed by $7.2 billion in currency sales by Uzbek citizens, a 31% increase from the previous year. Factors like Eurobond issuance and currency interventions contributed to a temporary appreciation of the (UZS).

Stricter Penalties for Domestic Violence Against Children

President Mirziyoyev signed a law strengthening penalties for domestic violence involving children. Amendments to Uzbekistan’s Criminal and Administrative Codes now impose prison sentences of up to three years for offenders, extending legal protections for minors and clarifying the limits of reconciliation in court for such cases.

Uzbekistan Airways Expands International Reach

Uzbekistan Airways announced the launch of direct flights from Tashkent to Lahore, Pakistan (starting November 15), and Hangzhou, China (beginning November 17), as part of efforts to improve connectivity with South Asia. Additionally, the airline plans to establish its first direct route to Tanzania, aiming to foster cultural and trade connections and support pilgrimage travel.

$50 Million Anti-Desertification Initiative

President Mirziyoyev unveiled a $50 million investment under the national “Green Space” project to combat desertification. This initiative focuses on planting drought-resistant vegetation, creating new parks, and expanding greening efforts across Uzbekistan.

Assassination Attempt on Komil Allamjonov

Former head of the Presidential Administration's Information Policy Department Komil Allamjonov narrowly escaped an assassination attempt near his residence on October 26. Two unidentified assailants fired multiple shots at his vehicle, but Allamjonov was unharmed. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack.
