In his speech, President Mirziyoyev underscored the pressing global issues of air and water pollution, soil erosion, desertification, and the overuse of fossil fuels. These factors, he noted, contribute to global warming, an increase in natural disasters, and pose significant threats to both the environment and public health.
To address these challenges, Uzbekistan has already launched several initiatives. The Yashil Makon (Green Space) national project was introduced three years ago to combat environmental degradation. Additionally, the country has begun implementing a Regional Climate Strategy in collaboration with neighboring nations and established the Central Asian University for Environmental and Climate Change Studies in Tashkent.
Uzbekistan's active role on the global stage was further emphasized as it initiated two key UN resolutions related to climate action. Moreover, the country is rapidly advancing its green energy sector, positioning it as a key driver of economic growth.
Reflecting the public's aspirations and recommendations, President Mirziyoyev proposed elevating these efforts to a new level by dedicating the upcoming year to environmental protection and green economic development. The proposal received unanimous support from the assembly, as confirmed in an official statement.
The government will now draft a state program focused on critical priorities, including the adoption of green technologies, water conservation, significant expansion of green spaces, mitigation of the Aral Sea disaster’s impacts, waste management solutions, and improving public health.
