Bahodir Kurbanov appointed as new SSS Chairman

General-Lieutenant Bahodir Kurbanov, who has served as Uzbekistan’s Minister of Defense for the past five years, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the State Security Service.

Kurbanov has had a distinguished career in Uzbekistan’s military and law enforcement sectors. Born in 1968, he began his service in the armed forces in 1987. After completing his mandatory military service in 1989, he pursued education at the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) Higher Investigative School in 1990 and graduated from the MIA Higher School in 1992.

Over the years, Kurbanov has held several key leadership roles. Between 2002 and 2005, he served as the head of the Jizzakh District Department of Internal Affairs, later assuming the same role in the Gallaaral District of the Jizzakh region in 2005. By 2008, he was appointed the First Deputy Head of the General Directorate of Patrol and Checkpoint Services under the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Later that year, he became the Chief of the Namangan Regional Department of Internal Affairs.

Kurbanov was promoted to Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs in 2013, serving until 2015, when he was appointed Head of the Tashkent City Police Department. He earned the rank of Major General in January 2017.

In 2018, Kurbanov transitioned to military leadership as Commander of the Tashkent Military District. He was subsequently appointed Minister of Defense on February 11, 2019, a role he held until his recent appointment as SSS Chairman. In January 2021, he was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant General.
