In an effort to combat corruption in the education sector, Kyrgyz authorities have carried out preventive measures that led to the expulsion of more than 13,000 students from higher education institutions in Osh. The State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan (SCNS) confirmed the information, as reported by news outlet 24.kg.
According to the report, the SCNS launched preventive actions at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025 with the participation of university administrators. These measures aimed to eliminate academic corruption and ensure compliance with institutional rules.
As a result, students who consistently failed to attend classes or had significant academic debts were expelled from five universities:
- Osh State University – 3,573 students
- Osh Technological University – 2,754 students
- Kyrgyz-Uzbek International University – 3,167 students
- Osh State Pedagogical University – 3,629 students
- Branch of Kyrgyz National University – 172 students
The SCNS is currently investigating whether university officials were involved in illegally enrolling or retaining students in violation of academic policies.
Previously, the SCNS had reported the expulsion of hundreds – in some cases, thousands – of students from universities in Bishkek, Naryn, and Issyk-Kul regions as part of a wider crackdown on corruption in higher education.
It was also previously revealed that some universities in Kyrgyzstan had enrolled Uzbek nationals who had never even entered the country.
