Earthquake in Kyrgyzstan causes flight disruptions in Tashkent
Two flights approaching Tashkent airport were forced to alter their routes on October 6 due to a seismic event in neighboring Kyrgyzstan. Among them was an Aeroflot flight from Moscow, which had to circle twice before safely landing at 01:50 local time. A MyFreighter flight from Athens faced a similar situation, holding in the air for some time before receiving clearance to land.
The disruptions also affected Uzbekistan Airways’ schedule. The HY553/HY554 Toshkent–Kuala Lumpur–Toshkent flights were delayed, with the aircraft departing from Tashkent at 03:35. Similarly, the HY301/302 Toshkent–Tel Aviv–Toshkent flights experienced delays, taking off from Tashkent at 11:00. Uzbekistan Airways attributed these delays to technical reasons.
The disruptions followed a 5.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Kyrgyzstan on the night of October 6. The tremor’s epicenter was located in the Jalal-Abad region at a depth of 10 kilometers, where it reached a magnitude of 7.0. The earthquake was felt across several regions in Uzbekistan, including the capital, Tashkent, where tremors were recorded at 2–3 points on the seismic scale.
Airline officials confirmed that the diversions were precautionary measures to ensure passenger safety in response to the regional seismic activity.
