Bank of China to finance large-scale transport infrastructure projects in Tashkent

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved a set of measures to modernize Tashkent’s transport system, reorganize its management, and reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

The resolution approves a roadmap for establishing an “efficient transport management system”. The plan includes a series of road construction and reconstruction projects scheduled for implementation through the end of 2029.

China Construction Fifth Engineering Division Co. Ltd. will be involved in the works. A total of $271.1 million in loan financing will be allocated for the implementation of these projects by the Bank of China.

More than one-third of this amount, $98.5 million, will be directed toward the construction of dedicated bus rapid transit (BRT) lanes in line with the plan presented in October.

By September 2026, Shahrisabz Street is set to undergo full-scale reconstruction at a cost of $6 million, covering the entire stretch from Mirabad Street (near the Grand Mir Hotel) to Amir Temur Avenue. A 3 km dedicated bus lane will be built as part of this project.

By the end of next November, two more BRT corridors are expected to be commissioned: along Amir Temur Avenue from the Uch Qahramon intersection to the Northern Railway Station (11 km), and along Yangi Sergeli between Choshtepa and Kipchak streets (5.5 km). A further $16.5 million in loan funds will be allocated for these works.

In the longer term, an additional 38 km of dedicated BRT lanes will be developed in stages along the Mirzo Ulugbek – Feruza – Yuzrabot, Lutfi – Muqimi, Qoratosh – Kukcha Darvoza, and the Small Ring Road – Parkent corridors. The total cost of these projects is estimated at $76 million, with completion scheduled by the end of 2029. The list of streets may be revised if necessary.

The roadmap also envisages the repair of roads and modernization of roadside infrastructure along 16 street sections with a total length of 36 km. A total of $36.5 million will be allocated for this purpose over the course of the next year.

Another major project involves the construction of an overpass linking Pahlavon Mahmud and Elbek streets over the Small Ring Road. Preliminary estimates put the cost of this project at $25.4 million.

In 2027, $33.5 million will be allocated for the reconstruction of nine streets with a combined length of 33 km. An additional $26.2 million will be directed toward the construction of a road tunnel along Amir Temur Avenue beneath the intersection with Rikhsili and Yangishakhan streets, known as the Yunusabad Circle.

In 2028, the reconstruction of another 15 street sections with a total length of 50 km is planned. The cost of these works is estimated at $51 million.
