Asia-Plus reported on December 15, citing the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, that preliminary agreements have also been reached at the ministerial level for electricity supplies from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Work is now under way to resolve the technical issues related to delivery from these countries.
Tajikistan’s only access route to external power markets runs through Uzbekistan’s energy system in the country’s southwest, via the 500 kV Regar–Guzar transmission line. To ensure the transit of electricity from Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, coordination is required with Uzbekistan, taking into account the transmission capacity of its grid.
The ministry added that Tajikistan’s energy system will be able to operate in parallel with the Central Asian Unified Power System, which would allow such coordination to occur automatically, once the country’s northern power lines are connected to the regional “energy ring”.
Tajikistan is expected to fully rejoin the Central Asian Unified Power System in the first quarter of 2026.
