Traffic deaths remain high across Uzbekistan despite prevention efforts

In 2025, the highest number of road deaths was recorded in Samarkand, Tashkent, and Fergana regions. The number of fatalities from traffic accidents increased year on year in Khorezm and Kashkadarya regions, as well as in the Republic of Karakalpakstan.

In the first 11 days of January 2026, 45 people died as a result of road traffic accidents in Uzbekistan. Eight of those deaths were recorded in Tashkent region.

Despite preventive measures being taken, the number of road traffic accident victims in Uzbekistan remains high.

According to a report reviewed by Kun.uz, a total of 1,854 people were killed on the country’s roads in 2025. Another 7,391 people sustained injuries of varying severity. The total number of road traffic accidents recorded nationwide last year amounted to 9,245. In December 2025 alone, 190 people died in traffic accidents across the republic.

For comparison, in 2024 there were 9,364 road traffic accidents, resulting in 1,869 deaths and injuries to 7,495 people.

In 2025, the highest number of traffic-related deaths by region was recorded in Samarkand region – 242 fatalities. Tashkent region followed with 225 deaths, Fergana region with 199, and Surkhandarya region with 167.

Compared with 2024, the number of deaths from road traffic accidents increased in Bukhara (+1), Fergana (+3), Surkhandarya (+8), Kashkadarya (+14), Khorezm (+40) regions, and in the Republic of Karakalpakstan (+13). The lowest number of fatalities was recorded in Syrdarya region (47 people), Navoi region (67 people), and Bukhara region (72 people).
