Uzbek man jailed for holding Tajik citizen captive over $11,000 loan
A resident of Surkhandarya region has been arrested for unlawfully detaining and torturing a citizen of Tajikistan over an unpaid debt.
According to the State Security Service, the incident occurred in Denov district, where a previously convicted local resident, born in 1993, allegedly held a Tajik national captive as collateral for a loan. According to investigators, the suspect had earlier lent $11,000 to an acquaintance from Dushanbe, born in 1988. As a guarantee for repayment, the lender reportedly kept the acquaintance’s associate, a Tajik citizen also born in 1993, in Denov.
Authorities said that when the debt was not repaid on time, the detained individual was unlawfully confined and subjected to physical abuse. The victim sustained serious bodily injuries as a result of the torture, the State Security Service said.
The suspect has been taken into custody, and a criminal case has been opened in connection with the incident. A court has ordered pretrial detention as a preventive measure while the investigation continues.
Law enforcement agencies did not disclose further details about the condition of the victim or the specific criminal charges, but confirmed that the case is being handled in accordance with the law.
