Tashkent Metro expands cashless system with closure of 19 station ticket offices
Tashkent Metro has closed ticket offices at 19 additional stations starting February 1, as part of a broader shift toward cashless fare payments.
The decision follows a sharp decline in cash ticket purchases, with most passengers now opting for non-cash payment methods, which are also cheaper. To ensure access for passengers who cannot use electronic payments, information kiosks are being installed at stations where single-use paper tickets with QR codes can be purchased.
According to the metro operator, a paper QR ticket purchased via infokiosks costs UZS 3,000, while fares paid through electronic payment methods amount to UZS 1,700.
Ticket offices will cease operations at the following stations:
- Chilonzor line: Sergeli, Ozgarish, Choshtepa, Milliy bog, Mustaqillik, Amir Temur, Pushkin
- Uzbekiston line: Dostlik, Mashinasozlar, Toshkent, Oybek, Kosmonavtlar, Uzbekiston, Gafur Gulom, Chorsu
- Yunusobod line: Turkiston, Shahriston, Bodomzor
Passengers can continue to pay fares using bank cards, transport cards, and mobile applications. At some stations, payment is also available via facial recognition (Face ID) and palm-based biometric systems (Palm Pay).
The latest closures build on earlier measures introduced in July last year, when the metro announced the shutdown of ticket offices in one vestibule at 13 stations due to a significant drop in cash transactions. Those stations included Pushkin, Dostlik, Toshkent, Oybek, Shahriston, and Bodomzor.
