Uzbekistan advances plans for new Tashkent international airport
Uzbekistan is continuing preparations for the construction of a new international airport serving the capital, with plans to build a large passenger terminal and two long runways as part of the first phase of the project. The development is expected to significantly expand the country’s aviation capacity and modernize its transport infrastructure.
On March 5, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on the progress of transport infrastructure modernization projects, including plans for the new Tashkent international airport.
During the meeting, officials presented the main parameters of the airport construction project and reported on ongoing design and survey work at the future airport site, as well as the next stages of implementation.
The president instructed responsible authorities to ensure thorough technical and economic planning, organize construction in accordance with modern standards, and guarantee the long-term reliable operation of the transport infrastructure.
According to the presentation, the first phase of the project provides for the construction of a passenger terminal covering 208,400 square meters, along with two runways measuring 4 kilometers each.
The new infrastructure will be designed to handle up to 20 million passengers annually and manage up to 30 aircraft takeoffs and landings per hour. Plans also include parking space for up to 169 aircraft.
Earlier, on October 15, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev launched the construction of the new airport in the Tashkent Region by laying a symbolic foundation stone.
The project is being implemented through a public–private partnership with an international consortium consisting of several companies and organizations:
– Vision Invest – 45%
– Sojitz Corporation – 30%
– Incheon International Airport Corporation – 15%
– Uzbekistan Airports – 10%
Once operational, the new airport is expected to handle up to 20 million passengers and 129,000 tons of cargo per year. The facility will also support up to 30 takeoffs and landings per hour and accommodate 62 aircraft simultaneously.
The airport complex will be connected to major toll highways linking Tashkent with Samarkand, Andijan, and Bostanlyk district.
Plans also include building a railway station for high-speed trains and launching shuttle services between Tashkent and the New Tashkent development area.
According to a report by The Korea Herald, the new Tashkent international airport is expected to open in 2029.
