Excitement but no pressure: Shomurodov believes Uzbekistan is ready for Colombia clash
Uzbekistan national football team head coach Fabio Cannavaro and captain Eldor Shomurodov shared their thoughts at a press conference ahead of their historic opening FIFA World Cup group stage match against Colombia on 18 June.
The Italian tactician confirmed that the entire squad is fit and ready for the upcoming encounter, while offering a realistic assessment of their Group C opponents. He noted that powerhouse teams like Colombia and Portugal compete at an exceptionally high level and possess formidable individual talents, which will require Uzbekistan to approach these fixtures with a high degree of caution.
Cannavaro praised rising defender Abdukodir Khusanov, describing him as a vital part of the backline who already operates at a high level but still possesses the potential to reach even greater heights. He emphasized that the tournament is a platform for the squad to showcase its best qualities and the unique Uzbek mentality. Drawing on his personal history as a player, the head coach remarked that managing a team at this level differs vastly from playing, as a coach must guide and communicate with 26 different individuals simultaneously.
Addressing questions regarding the late omission of midfielder Jaloliddin Masharipov from the final tournament roster, Cannavaro clarified the situation. He revealed that Masharipov had accumulated only 20 minutes of competitive match play over the preceding eight months. The decision to leave him out was not related to ongoing knee issues but stemmed from a separate injury. The coaching staff ultimately decided against taking a major risk with his health, expressing regret over losing such an excellent player.
The head coach also brushed off concerns raised by midfielder Abbosbek Fayzullaev regarding the intense workload during pre–tournament training camps. Cannavaro noted that enduring hardships is a natural part of training and a necessary step for any team looking to prove itself and achieve success on the world stage.
Team captain Eldor Shomurodov echoed his coach's focused mindset, describing the atmosphere within the camp as excellent. He acknowledged a sense of natural excitement surrounding Uzbekistan’s first-ever World Cup appearance but insisted that the players feel no negative pressure.
Representing the nation as captain at a long-awaited World Cup is a matter of immense pride, Shomurodov stated, adding that the squad is fully prepared and eager to secure a positive result. He called upon fans across Uzbekistan to support the team as they look to enjoy the tournament, gain invaluable elite-level experience, and test themselves against the best in the world.
