Shomurodov contends with Messi and Mbappe for finest goal of World Cup group stage
FIFA has officially launched a public vote to determine the best goal scored during the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, with Uzbekistan national team captain Eldor Shomurodov among the elite nominees.
Shomurodov earned his place on the shortlist following a spectacular goal against the DR Congo. The Uzbek forward faces stiff competition from established football icons, including Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, who both secured nominations for their respective strikes. The list also highlights emerging global talents, such as Kevin Pina of Cape Verde and Wilson Isidor of Haiti.
The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered a record-breaking 215 goals across 72 matches. To streamline the selection process for fans, FIFA technical experts narrowed down the extensive pool of goals to a final shortlist of the 12 finest strikes.
