The agreement was reached during talks held in Kabul on July 26 between Uzbekistan's Minister of Transport Ilhom Mahkamov and Afghanistan's Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohammad Fazil Mazloum.
The ministers discussed expanding road freight transportation between the two countries and improving operating conditions for national transport companies.
A key issue on the agenda was the optimization of fees imposed on Uzbek freight carriers operating in Afghanistan. The two sides agreed to convene an interagency working group by August 10 to finalize proposals for reducing the charges on a reciprocal basis.
They also agreed to organize a separate meeting involving representatives of relevant Afghan government agencies to address operational issues faced by international road transport companies and resolve them more efficiently.
The latest agreement builds on commitments made in October 2024, when the governments of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan agreed to lower several charges applied to Uzbek carriers.
As part of those measures, the fee for entering Afghanistan was reduced by 30%, from 5,000 afghanis to 3,500 afghanis, while the toll for crossing the Friendship Bridge was cut by 41.7%, from 12,000 afghanis to 7,000 afghanis.
