The latest figures extend a strong post-pandemic recovery in ridership, following a record 286.8 million passenger journeys in 2025 – the highest annual total since the metro system began operations.
According to the committee, last year's figure was 161.1 million higher than in 2000, when the metro carried 125.7 million passengers, representing an increase of nearly 2.3 times.
Ridership declined steadily throughout much of the 2000s and early 2010s, falling to a low of 52.3 million passengers in 2015. Passenger numbers then began to recover before dropping again to 38.8 million in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted public transport.
The rebound accelerated in the years that followed. Annual ridership rose to 101.8 million in 2021, increased to 136.7 million in 2022 and reached 172 million in 2023. It then jumped to 270.3 million in 2024 before climbing to a record 286.8 million in 2025.
