Additional rescuers from the Syrdarya and Jizzakh regions have joined the operation, which has been underway around the clock since the accident. Divers, boats and other specialised equipment are also involved in the search.
Ministry spokesman Murad Sadikov provided an update on the operation. Rescue unit commander Rustam Buriev said the family had rented a boat for a trip on the reservoir.
Reportedly, the boat carried a husband and wife, their daughter and two sons, as well as the driver.
The family stopped in an area where swimming is prohibited to take photographs and then decided to swim without life jackets, he said.
“While in the water, the father and his two sons suffered muscle cramps. It was windy and waves formed on the water. They drowned at that moment,” Buriev said.
The boat driver had warned the head of the family to put on a life jacket before entering the water, but the advice was not followed.
“The mother and sister were also on the boat. They called for help. The boat driver also entered the water and tried to rescue them, but it was impossible. It all happened very quickly,” Buriev said.
The search operation is being overseen by Minister of Emergency Situations Azizbek Ikramov. Representatives of the ministry and other services are working at the operational headquarters.
Buriev urged people to swim only in designated areas and follow safety rules. He also called on people travelling by boat or jet ski to use life jackets and ensure that a properly licensed driver is present.
