The speculation was reported by football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, who claimed that Cannavaro could consider leaving the national team after the tournament was rescheduled.

The Asian Cup, which Saudi Arabia is set to host, has been postponed by almost a year. Originally scheduled for January 2027, the tournament will now run from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) cited logistical challenges and disruptions to regional travel as reasons for the change.

In response to the reports, the UFA issued a statement saying the information was false and urged media outlets and supporters to rely on official sources.

Usmon Toshev, head of the UFA's national teams department, also addressed the speculation, confirming that Cannavaro has a valid contract with the association and will lead Uzbekistan in its upcoming friendly against Russia.

The UFA appointed Cannavaro in autumn 2025 under a 2+3-year agreement. The contract provides for a possible three-year extension depending on the national team's performance at the Asian Cup.
