WHO chief praises Uzbekistan’s first lady for leadership in childhood cancer care

Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, praised Uzbekistan’s First Lady, Ziroat Mirziyoyeva, for her leadership in improving childhood cancer care and supporting children diagnosed with the disease.

Following a meeting in Tashkent, Ghebreyesus described Mirziyoyeva as a “champion” for advancing pediatric oncology and improving the lives of young patients.

He highlighted the work of the Zamin Foundation, which she chairs, noting its pivotal role in strengthening pediatric oncology services and expanding access to hospital-based education through the Republican Children’s Oncology and Hematology Centre and the nationwide network of Mehrli Maktab.

Ghebreyesus said the initiative brings together healthcare professionals and educators to provide children with cancer not only with medical treatment, but also with the social and educational support needed to recover and pursue their ambitions.

During his visit, he met several young patients, including cancer survivors Samira and Dilnavoz, whom he described as examples of resilience and hope. He noted that Dilnavoz, a talented artist, aspires to become an interpreter.

The WHO chief also reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Uzbekistan’s efforts, including through cooperation with regional and international partners to improve outcomes for children battling cancer.
